3.0 due to 5 stars Good image quality but other features need improvement, March 26, 2007
This review is from: Samsung Digimax S850 8.1MP Digital Camera with 5x Advance Shake Reduction Optical Zoom (Black) (Electronics)
I am a point and shooter but I've got owned 3 other unwanted cameras (Fuji and Canon) before this town. My newest one was Canon A75 so my review is in fact according to my prior knowledge about these cameras.
Pros:
Good image quality overall. Auto focus successful usually.
the AF assist lamp and flash are powerful making low light images come out obvious and, somehow, the two subject and background are balanced. I can tell the setting which can be like 10 foot behind the topic clearly. Canon was very poor in this area. The Canon's AF lamp was very weak and almost useless. Canon's flash was also bad photos with flash often had subjects very bright but background dark.
5X and 8MP work as advertised.
Cons:
battery isn't so excellent. I initially used some old (whilst still being good) 2300mAh Sony. It lasted not very many hours of testing. I probably took about 40 50 shots and 10 videos. Film mode drained more battery and would report the fact that batteries were dead and shut down after a couple of seconds of taking video. The batteries however still a large amount of juice in the basket and that i could still require a lots of pictures. I switched to somewhat of a fresh set of two 2500mAh Energizers along with the video mode then lasted considerably longer. So, ensure you get good batteries and bring spares along with you.
microphone strength is poor.
when switched to video mode, it pre zoom of 1.5X . This really bad since it forced me to step from the subject (usually my children) to create the sound even weaker.
performance is substandard. Camera turns on quick enough. The good news is noticeable shutter lag but nevertheless acceptable as soon as you become accustomed to it. However, flash charging time is extremely slow about 3 secs and maybe.
burst mode is useless because it's slow. no difference than taking consecutive shots manually.
ASR mode is slow. That is needed 1 sec from press shutter to LCD power outages to shutter sound play, then another 1.5 to two sec for post processing. I wouldn't consider it useless invariably other reviewers say. It works. I'd some better pictures using ASR once the subjects are far whereas in the shade or low light. In the indoor situation, appear making flash. Also, as a consequence of shutter lag and slow shutter speed, ASR is not good with moving subjects (but I presume Image Stabilizer in other manufacturers can't handle this either).
The size is larger than expected. "1 inch thick" is misleading. The slimest perhaps the camera is 1 inch! The medial side you offer the camera is roughly 1.3 inch thick and beware the len is thick. Should you be focused on the length, visit 3D image at Samsung website first.
Goods and Bads for VIDEO mode:
Now the MPEG4 feature, and that is the feature that got me to consider this camera. Due to compression advantage, We could use normal Facts (non high speed) to record highest resolution video fine. The recording quality was somewhat a mixed feeling and that i want to do furthur research for this. I often tried DivX Codec and Windows Media Player playing this, don't try the attached software. I didn't expect the media player compare unique car features. The avi file was actually indicating it's Xvid but I wasn't able to utilize Xvid codec to pass the time it i like to hear. When played at its native resolution, the videos look OK. When enlarged to 2X or full screen, the compression artifects become very visible and also video look pretty bad i.e. moving subjects will probably have clear noise about the edges, low light videos should have noise all over the place. ' understand just how the product quality is leaner after i enlarge it. My point is the noise I recieve their enlarge a M JPEG video maybe a DivX movie is far less disturbing than I receive using this camera.
320x160 mode is useless as it is small and a person always has to enlarge film when viewed. 640x320 is acceptable when viewed at its native resolution.
I attempted to spend time playing some 640x320 files with my MPEG4 capable DVD player on my 21inch TV plus the videos look decent enough. The fast paced subjects look some jerky sometimes however is not bad and the noise much less expensive noticeable.
I recently came across 20fps beneficial for saving storage when the quality is a good example for slow moving subjects (alot of cameras only support 15fps or 10fps for slow mode).
Optical zoom works in video mode. Sound is mute only as you move the len is moving.
