4.0 out of 5 stars two steps forward, one backwards, December 19, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pentax K r 12.4 MP Digital SLR Camera with 3.0 Inch LCD and 18 55mm f/3.5 5.6 and 55 300mm f/4 5.8 Lenses (Black) (Electronics)
Amazon was selling the K r kit with 18 55 and 55 300 lenses in a brilliant price around Thanksgiving 2010. I had been wanting to upgrade from my k200d for sometime and jumped along at the opportunity. 15 days along with the camera have given me a good perspective within the pros/cons for this upgrade.

My primary motivation for upgrading was the rave reviews about low light/high iso performance in the K r (and K x). I chose the K r during the K x considering that high fps while keeping focused time viewfinder features were well worth the minor difference in price. Here are the good qualities (+) and cons ( ):

+ high ISO performance is very useful. Now i'm shooting ISO1600 indoors regularly. Processed images can offer no noise around this setting. The performance can be compared (or better) compared to a k200d at ISO400
+ auto focus really is fast as promised
+ burst shooting is absolutely fast.
+ camera button controls much easier as well as k200d (direct iso/flash etc. buttons)
+ it's actually a much lighter camera (but that's strangling as well)
+ automatic white balance without flash is way greater than the k200d (aforementioned had very warm overtones in tungsten one example is the K r produces perfectly natural white balance for common indoor and outdoor lighting situations)
+ the supplied 55 300 kit lens is superb. in comparison to my current 70 300 Tamron lens it's much sharper for the long end.
+ live view is cool and allows shooting holding the digital camera in the least kinds of angles. the screen is bright enough being visible from just about any angle.

focusing is fast except as accurate. in particular my camera was front focusing and that i found this as a commonly reported problem on the net. i almost considered returning my camera before reading for the focus fine adjustment option. setting your camera for your maximum front focus adjustment eliminated the matter usually (although still doesn't seem perfect). never assume all lenses suffer equally badly unfortunately definitely the lens (Tamron 28 75 f2.8) does.
auto white balance with flash feels weird (evidently it over compensates for flash)
(updated: i came across that (for my home shots) changing the white balance to 'warm white flourescent' inside raw editor (silkypix) largely fixed this challenge).
the supplied software is absolutely terrible. i process RAW images on my pc and then the old software was simple but usable. The brand new is a labyrinth of features except those people u should have (like not resetting the adjustment settings on every new image). Morever it crashes (i cannot attempt it on one of my pcs)
the fresh 18 55 lens feels cheap in to the a bed that was supplied with previous models (plastic mount without hood). now i'm preparing to dispose from the brand new one and hang up on to the old one.
no weather sealing and the entire body doesn't feel as substantial. the k200d would once sell within the same cost but were magnesium alloy body and was weather sealed. the K r is neither. The body is not as substantial to maintain accumulate battery compartment is smaller and also the hand grip round the compartment doesn't feel as secure as before.
doesn't take AA batteries automatically. this is really lame i'll must spend more money to consider an exceptional adapter. rechargable AA batteries less complicated more advanced than proprietary ones.
movie mode is really useless caused by not enough auto focus. almost all DSLRs are just like this making it truly ding against K r just dont buy it when deciding to take videos. (Updated: i have discovered motion picture that should be very jittery even slow moving everyday scenes. it is not clear why that is the case since 24fps is supposedly up to scratch)
(Updated) one additional annoyance is the fact choosing the fully automatic 'A' mode just isn't going to reset all of the customized settings specifically the main objective point and AF mode. As a consequence i am unable to simply set the camera to 'A' mode and hand them back to the P&S photographer (since i have always leave your camera at center point focus). That's really painful.

there are several new image processing features inside the K r (HDR, shadow lighting, filters etc.) but the can all be done in software and so are low number of valuable personally (may well be for other users).

if i used to be shooting daylight/outdoors in good light the K r is truly a downgrade out of your k200d. however the grow in low light the weather is exemplary and outweigh the negatives (that there are many). It's the same a keeper in my opinion. Considering that i'd give you a trendy towards k200d this really at a minimum a four star.

For people thinking of buying Pentax at last Body word of caution. Pentax appear to be falling further and further behind around the pick of lenses entirely on their platform. For example the Tamron 18 270 lens is unavailable as well as 18 250 lens was removed the market. There isn't any cheap 50mm prime lens available (the most cost effective the initial one is now $350). This is a rather sorry situation and when i seemed to be not already picked up some Pentax mount lenses i might have definitely taken a lot closer brows through the Nikon D5000 that seems really nearby the K r in price/capabilities. In addition the supplied kit lenses are incredibly good in case one doesn't prefer to get a great deal of lenses the Pentax is an excellent value (always more functionality and nicer build per $ than Canon/Nikon).
