4.0 from 5 stars Canon PowerShot S230: Pocket Hercules, December 14, 2002
This review is from: Canon PowerShot S230 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
WHY I PURCHASED THE POWERSHOT 230:
I never was a legitimate fan of Canon cameras, especially Canon unwanted cameras. It wasn't until recently if you have a couple of my girlftriend were sending me pictures via email that have been taken that has a Canon Powershot camera. I used to be pretty impressed together with the results and decided to take a look at newest Powershot; the S230. This camera packed a considerable amount of features, but kept most towards minimum. Producing images at 3.2 megapixels, the S230 was definitely appealing.
WHAT They come in:
Canon PowerShot S230 Digital ELPH camera
NB 1LH Lithium ion battery
16 MB CompactFlash (CF) Card
USB cable
A/V cable
Wrist Strap
CD with Canon software suite
Users Manual
POCKETABILITY:
The right off the bat you'll observe using this camera tends to be that it's small. Most likely smallest dslr camera I've seen from the 3 megapixel category. You can truly put this staying with you and don't have everyone stare in the bulge...
DURABILITY:
I've already dropped this camera once on my hardwood floor. Amazingly, still it works like no bodies business. The S230 is encased in stainless steel with some chrome accents and a very few plastic parts (mainly the switches & dials). I expect this camera to last a few years with no problems, if they are not longer. Somebody of mine has owned his Powershot S100 for upwards of two yearsrrr time and then he still loves his to death.
EASE Useful:
The S230 was as speedy to employ (if you are not easier) as these Sony digital camera models. Before selling my Sony DSC S75, I needed the chance to compare both, side by side. The length alone, gave the S230 a wearisome advantage. The picture quality can be quite impressive considering the S230. The indoor photos which took without worrying about the flash turned out great. The auto exposure, and the auto ISO settings works fine, if you have to manually set those on your individual, it's simple to do. Los angeles cpa cool features at the S230 similar to picture effects (monochrome, sepia, soft, sharp, etc.). The 1.5" LCD is quite useful it is a simple fact that, even during bright sunlight.
ADVANCED FOCUSING:
AiAF (Artificial Intelligence Auto Focus) may be a new feature found on the S230 that was not obtained in the sooner models of the Powershots. This function allows the S230 out there among the nine focus areas around the frame to capture the sharpest shot. It's amazing how this works. This feature could also easily be not power on with the settings. This feature is available on the new Canon G3, in the process, and its the flagship within the point and shoot photographic camera line for Canon.
PICTURE QUALITY:
As I said, I seemed to be quite impressed together with the photo quality. I was able to print several people on photo paper using my HP 960c deskjet printer. Printing them in 5X7 produced brilliant, almost photolab quality pictures. I'd personally add that my Sony DSC S75 also produces the best photos, as well, but I expect that using a camera that marvelous Carl Zeiss Sonar lens, 3.3 megapixel resolution quality.... If you should own a Canon printer, try to be capable of directly print from your S230 making use of supplied cable. I just ordered the Canon i850 printer, so I'm anxiously waiting to use it out.
VIDEO MODE:
The power to capture Thirty seconds of 640X480 AVI video (20 fps) with sound is awesome! My father was surprised at how clearly it captures motion video. Although you can actually capture film with sound, you will not have enough knowledge to get involved in it back with sound for the camera itself, which is not loaded a speaker. The S230 is able to capturing a lot more than A very short time if you use smaller resolution. After see the Canon Powershot website, I found that begin using a high speed CompactFlash (CF) card, just be in a position to capture around A few seconds of 640X480 video. Canon expects to plug the broadband internet CF card soon.
BATTERY STRENGTH:
This is how I'd say that my Sony DSC S75 shines. Every bit of Sony's unwanted cameras display the lifetime of the battery in seconds. The S230 goes strong until there's about 5% or less power left. I've read a handful of articles and reviews stating that the battery by having an the weakness with this camera, but it is only a few that bad. Everthing hinges on the amount you use the LCD display, the flash, as well as how often you turn on/off the nuvi 780. I quickly ordered another battery from buy.com and I'm perfectly happy now.
The S230 includes a separate charger. This is very convenient, simply because style charge battery while using the camera, similar to most on the Sony cameras do (Sony sells it charger to be a separate accessory). From a fully discharged battery, the charger will definitely completely charge it in about couple of hours. We have an LED which displays in `red' within the next charging and `green' when it's complete.
OVERALL WEAKNESSES:
Some people will say that your small size can be a weakness, but I'd say that the dimension is definitely its strength. The optical zoom capability is only 2X, in order to shouldn't get able to zoom up very closely from afar. It will suggest to a zoom, but this will likely contribute to grainy photos. The macro mode of one's S230 is not as crisp as my Sony DSC S75, but I often deal with it. Also, the flash about the S230 just isn't as effective while it really should be. The flash tends to white out (too bright) close range subjects, but is quite weak for a subjects above 6 feet away. I'll have to fiddle more while using settings, Perhaps. Finally, the tripod mount just isn't situated the biggest market of the digital camera. It's actually put on along side it, causing it to be off center and tough to balance.
SUMMARY:
I mainly purchased this camera for its size, but it is turned into something a certainly better camera than I anticipated. When considering photo quality, it will not beat the higher end video cameras, it also will sure give them away a run your money can buy. We must hand it Canon for working with a truly pocket sized 3.2 megapixel photographic camera.
