5.0 from 5 stars Olympus Stylus 840, March 9, 2008
I too, paid dreaded retail at BB. I knew the associated fee would drop soon, but I desired your camera right at that moment. No regrets.
This camera is a darker shade of (cobalt)blue than the photo shows. IMHO this is a much nicer shade. I purchase plenty of comments on it is great looks.
BTW, this camera Takes SD memory, the Micro kind. I returned the weird Olympus memory once I realised your camera requires a MicroSD chip. I bought a 2GIG for 15 dollars. The good thing regarding the MicroSD is you will not need to tote you in an internet cafe to DL pictures when you're on a break.
Just slap the chip (with all the supplied adapter)suitable Kingston Data Traveler Reader (20 dollars, in addition to being a standalone 2GIG thumb at the same time!). No need for any software. Just use Windows. Microsoft features a cool free (and small)utility called Power Toys Image Resizer that installs on any PC with XP. Perfectly simply click on any image (or hold shift key and click on a series) and "Bob's Your Uncle", the necessary pix are resized to email to friends or blogs.
I love your camera and therefore the extra optical zoom available. The Super Macro mode is incredible for one compact camera. Extremely close and sharp images which could be made even much closer digitally on the computer. You possibly can focus an attempt after it will be taken in the camera to find now how well the picture stands up. Amazing. Note:Stay away from trembling camera for macro work. The stabilizer will not help much here.
The camera is advertised a "splash proof". This might be so for those controls, nonetheless battery compartment does not have any rubber seals. Still, it was a factor for my situation purchasing this camera. I vacation in Thailand where it is typically wet every now and then. Olympus does lumber species water proof/shock proof (resistant, really) camera for additional money with out most of the 840's features.
The controls are intuitive for anyone who is within the digital age. I haven't even cracked the manual open yet. I often read it sometime for more information on all of the features. But a long way Image willing to access such a lot of just on my own together with the easy navigate menu. I've not yet bothered to load the software on my PC yet. Up to date my needs are increasingly being met by Windows. I'll travel to barefoot running eventually. The actual What i'm trying to make is that you can largely charge it, take some pictures, DL the crooks to your personal computer, and email all of them out trying to read the manual or wreck havoc on Olympus software. I love that. You syncs right on the top of windows using the supplied USB cord.
The Olympus charger takes 5 hours which happens to be dismal. However is not to,perform a search here on Amazon and find DIRT cheap spare batteries and 1 hour quick chargers (observed a cigarette lighter adapter).
EDIT: They lied. The charger takes exactly the same length of time, however it is lesser, so a fantastic total loss. Spare battery seems fine.
I highly recommend any type of soft case This breadmaker. A Lowepro Rezo 20 soft case along with a pocket for spare battery. This snap and Velcro belt loop that is attached with any back pack strap or fanny pack in addition to your belt. Very handy and inexpensive. Be sure to obtain the newer, improved model with all the extra security on the snap combined with Velcro about the belt loop.
For the dollars I do believe often a better camera image wise, but not until you intend to make huge prints. And also the other cameras don't come into play cool blue either! Nor are they using the mixture on the Super Macro mode, 5X optical zoom, and splash resistance.
Coming out right about now, is Olympus's other Stylus cameras with 7X optical zoom. Extra money, slightly bigger and heavier. But worth a look.
Even though I paid about 30 dollars a rediculous amount of We are happy using this type of camera and be ready to be long.
