5.0 outside of 5 stars Unless you are a sport journalist, I additionally wouldn't think you are able to not be successful utilizing this camera, May 2, 2007
The 10 Megapixel Nikon D40x is focused on people that want to know relatively compact and light camera yet having almost all important SLR features. The D40 is priced reasonably. Many people feel, if you're still considering if they should obtain a compact digital camera maybe a DSLR, the D40x would have been a better option than any compact digital camera. However if you happen to be already determining to receive a DSLR or else you want more control from the picture taking experience, browsing would recommend someone to also test the D50, D70s and/or D80 first before settling on chose the D40x (or D40). I really want you in order that guess what happens you will definately get (not get) aided by the D40x. Avoid getting me wrong though, the D40x happens to be an awesome camera, and i also don't believe you should regret purchasing one. There are many limitation while using the D40x which shouldn't bother most people, as an example, the D40x doesn't need dedicated button to move picture, white balance or ISO settings (which generally only professional/enthusiast will care). When you understand (and accept) its limitation, the D40x is a potent and exciting photography machine.
Just like several its (DSLR) siblings, the D40x powers on instantly and take pictures with minimal shutter lag which might be the serious greatest things about a DSLR with a point and shoot camera. Beyond the P,S,A,M mode, the image expertise of the auto settings (auto, child mode, landscape etc) are also great. With 3 frames per second you're able to capture movement progress in sports like football, basketball, baseball etc. Also great to photograph all your family or child (child mode). The D40x is the right approximately camera.
Some notable new features:
1. Auto (no flash) mode. Without mode the flash will pop up (on all the other pre programmed mode) if you don't want to use flash (that is annoying). The interior flash will not appear automatically considering the P,S,A,M settings.
2. In camera editing capability similar to white or black, sepia and some filter effects etc. While sounds gimmicky, these traits are of help designed for those that does not need Photoshop cs4 (or other image editing software).
3. 10.2 Megapixel sensor for 3782 X 2592 on large image size settings. Nevertheless this is enough to print bigger than 13 X 19 Inch.
4. 3 frames per second (vs 2.5 for D40)
To date, D40 and D40x will be the smallest and lightest among many of the Nikon DSLR (even small compared to the canon eos Rebel XT/XTi, however D40 and D40x one is more ergonomics). I think that choosing a camera which fits comfortably with each of your hands is very important. Therefore, You ought to visitors to test you before choosing (although you may are interested online, please do stop at a physical store and try out the camera first whenever feasible).
The D40/D40x just has 3 (horizontal) autofocus point (5 for D50 and 11 for D80). Once you know "The Rule of Thirds", a further AF points above and below the guts focus point (easily obtainable in D50 and D80) are handy to assist create the horizontal third line. However, these horizontal AF point in D40/D40x 's still helpful to create the vertical third line. Also one can focus with the middle AF point and following the focus is lock then move the frame upwards/downwards to bring about the horizontal third line. Just make sure the exposure level continues to accurate when you move the frame developing lock the attention.
About the 18 55mm II AF S kit lens: An outstanding lens producing sharp photos (though not really a quickly lens). Also decent for close up/macro photography. Lens uses internal focus technology and focusing operation is silent. An incredibly decent kit lens.
Lens compatibility: Recognize that with D40/D40x, autofocus function will never are employed by non AF S/AF I lens. If you should curently have non AF S/AF I Nikon lenses and want a backup or replacement camera, you're more satisfied buying D50, D70s or D80. Like the D40, it'll be along the way of keep with AF S and AF I type lenses. I'm not sure why Nikon choose this route for those D40/D40x (whether to enable smaller size camera or to any extent further Nikon will undoubtedly make AF S lens compatible camera). Several of a good Nikon AF S lenses (cost bracket added: low, medium, high) that will be fully suitable for the D40/D40x which includes:
Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF S DX (L)
Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF S (M)
Nikon 18 55mm f/3.5 5.6G ED AF S DX (L)
Nikon 18 55mm f/3.5 5.6G ED II AF S DX (L)

Nikon 17 55mm f/2.8G ED IF AF S DX (H)
Nikon 28 70mm f/2.8D ED IF AF S (H)
Nikon 70 200mm f/2.8G ED IF AF S VR (H)
Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED IF AF S VR Micro (M)
And a lot of other expensive prime tele/zoom lens like 200 400mm, 300m, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm.
High priced lens ($1000+) are often pro level lens which always have better construction, faster (f stop), and produce better quality picture. However, more often than not, cheap lens will serve your preferences perfectly. It is very important to be aware what you have to make use of camera for before deciding which camera and lens to shop for.
Image excellence of the D40x is extremely good that's #1 factor that I consider when searching for are just looking for camera.
Here are the benefits on the D40x many people feel:
Pros:
1. Nice straight from the camera result image quality
2. 10.2 Megapixel sensor
3. Lightweight and light weight weight
4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD
5. 3 frames per second
6. B/W, Sepia, several more in camera editing features.
7. Instant power on, fast autofocus resulting in nil shutter lag
8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.
9. Great battery life (500+ about the same charge. 1000+ if flash is absolutely not used).
10. Auto (flash off) mode available
Cons:
1. No direct button to vary QUAL, WB and ISO settings
2. Grip comfortably but may just be too small for many people
3. No top LCD with zero front command dial
4. Autofocus will never use non AF S or non AF I lenses (such as the 70 300m G and 50mm f/1.8D lens)
5. No AF/MF switch (need to take the start the lens)
6. Only 3 autofocus point
7.
8. No night landscape mode in pre programmed settings
9. 1/200 flash sync (that is definitely slower than D40's 1/500)
10. No depth of field preview button
Comparing D40x while using D40. Personally , i choose the D40 above the D40x caused by only minor improvement within the D40x. As it were do a great number of cropping and print larger than 13 X 19 Inch then it'd make sense to help get the D40x, otherwise use that $200 (price difference) to get SB 400 flash or better/more versatile lens (for example upgrading the kit lens to 18 70mm AF S or 18 200mm AF S VR or add the 55 200mm AF S VR contact lens). In the event you shoot sports or fast action (in continuous/burst mode) and need well over 3 frames per second then try out the D200 with 5 FPS. For enthusiast, 2.5 FPS (D40) or 3 FPS (D40x) is good enough i believe.
In conclusion, the D40x may be for those that want excellent pictures, additional control (than the point and shoot camera), and provide a DSLR experience (instant power on with out shutter lag), and never having to carry a bulky camera. And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly (which faster focusing processor, faster fps and larger memory buffer can be needed), the D40x is really whatever you needs.
Happy Photographing!
