4.0 because of 5 stars Canon PowerShot S230: Pocket Hercules, December 14, 2002
This review is from: Canon PowerShot S230 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
WHY I PURCHASED THE POWERSHOT 230:
I was not ever really a fan of Canon cameras, especially Canon lawn movers. It wasn't until recently that the handful of my local freinds were sending me pictures via email have got taken having Canon Powershot camera. I used to be pretty impressed while using results and thought they would see the newest Powershot; the S230. This camera packed a considerable amount of features, but kept the bulk into a minimum. Producing images at 3.2 megapixels, the S230 was definitely appealing.
WHAT IT COMES WITH:
Canon PowerShot S230 Digital ELPH camera
NB 1LH Lithium ion battery
16 MB CompactFlash (CF) Card
USB cable
A/V cable
Wrist Strap
CD with Canon software suite
Users Manual
POCKETABILITY:
The initial thing you notice regarding this camera is that it's small. Really the smallest digicam Possess seen during the 3 megapixel category. You can truly put this for you and not have everyone stare at the bulge...
DURABILITY:
I've already dropped this camera once on my hardwood floor. Amazingly, still it works like no bodies business. The S230 is encased in stainless steel by chrome accents and a couple plastic parts (mainly the switches & dials). I expect this camera to last a number of years which have no problems, if he does not longer. A friend of mine has owned his Powershot S100 for upwards of 2 years in which he still loves his to death.
EASE Of usage:
The S230 was as easy to work with (in any other case easier) as my previous Sony camcorders. Before selling my Sony DSC S75, I had created the chance to compare both, side by side. The style alone, gave the S230 a perplexing advantage. The picture quality is really impressive while using S230. The indoor photos which i took without worrying about flash ended up great. The auto exposure, as well as the auto ISO settings works fine, when you intend to manually set those found on your very own, on the web do. There are cool features for the S230 which include picture effects (grayscale, sepia, soft, sharp, etc.). The 1.5" LCD is rather useful and is particularly specific, there is bright sunlight.
ADVANCED FOCUSING:
AiAF (Artificial Intelligence Auto Focus) is known as a new feature found on the S230 that had been not included in the earlier models of the Powershots. This function allows the S230 to pick from the nine focus areas for the frame to capture the sharpest shot. It's amazing how this works. This feature could also easily be put off around the settings. This feature is found within the new Canon G3, at the same time, and it is the flagship on the point and shoot photographic camera line for Canon.
PICTURE QUALITY:
As I pointed out, I have been quite impressed in the photo quality. I managed to print any of them on photo paper using my HP 960c deskjet printer. Printing them in 5X7 produced brilliant, almost photolab quality pictures. I'd personally include that my Sony DSC S75 also produces among the better photos, too, but I expect that on a camera that carries a Carl Zeiss Sonar lens, 3.3 megapixel resolution quality.... Any time you own a Canon printer, you should be in the position to directly print off from your S230 making use of supplied cable. I simply ordered canon's i850 printer, so I'm anxiously waiting provide versus eachother.
VIDEO MODE:
The ability to capture A few seconds of 640X480 AVI video (20 frames per second) with sound is awesome! My dad was surprised at how clearly it captures motion video. Although you can actually capture the video with sound, do not have the ability act back with sound for the camera itself, because it is not designed with a speaker. The S230 is in a position of capturing beyond A few seconds when you use smaller resolution. After browsing Canon Powershot website, I found that work with a high speed CompactFlash (CF) card, you'll want to be in the position to capture more than A very short time of 640X480 video. Canon expects to offer the fast CF card soon.
BATTERY STRENGTH:
This is the place I'd say that my Sony DSC S75 shines. All of Sony's cameras display the remaining life of it within a few minutes. The S230 goes strong until there's about 5% or less power left. I've read one or two articles and reviews proclaiming that the battery life's the weakness of your camera, but it is you cannot assume all that bad. The lot rrs dependent upon the level of you use the LCD display, the flash, and exactly how often you turn on/off the product. However ordered an extra battery from buy.com and i am perfectly happy now.
The S230 features a separate battery charger. This is very convenient, whilst you style charge the battery with all the camera, like the majority of of your Sony cameras do (Sony sells it charger to provide a separate accessory). By a fully discharged battery, the charger has the capacity to completely charge it in about a couple of hours. Anticipated to LED which displays in `red' only when it's charging and `green' if it's complete.
OVERALL WEAKNESSES:
Some people will say that your small size is a weakness, but I'd say that your dimension is definitely its strength. The optical zoom capability is only 2X, and that means you probably will not be in a position to zoom up very closely from afar. It can offer a digital zoom, but it might give you grainy photos. The macro mode with the S230 isn't as crisp as my Sony DSC S75, but I'll live with it. Also, the flash at the S230 just isn't as effective as it needs to be. The flash sometimes white out (too bright) close range subjects, but is incredibly weak for a subjects more than 6 feet away. I'm going to fiddle a few more along with the settings, I. Finally, the tripod mount isn't positioned in center of you. Is in reality placed on along side it, causing it to be off center and difficult to balance.
SUMMARY:
I mainly purchased this camera for that size, however it is become a certainly better camera than I anticipated. When it comes to photo quality, may possibly not beat the higher end video cameras, but it will sure permit them to have a run for the money. We must hand it Canon for sustaining truly pocket sized 3.2 megapixel dslr camera.
