The Canon EOS Digital Rebel camera now has the latest, faster, even smaller big brother. Sibling rivalries aside, the 8.0 megapixel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT SLR adds resolution, speed, extra creative control, that has been enhanced security in the hand to a single with the smallest and lightest old cameras inside the class. Observed its advancements in ergonomic design and technology, this easy to use EOS camera works with most of Canon's EF lenses comprising the EF S lenses.

Rebel With out Choice No More
The EOS Digital Rebel XT camera took its place alongside the original 6.3 megapixel EOS Digital Rebel camera that first placed an affordable, high resolution digital SLR throughout the hands of Canon consumers. The EOS Digital Rebel XT model emerged in two kit configurations: with Canon's high quality EF S 18 55mm f3.5 f5.6 contact lens (in matte black whilst in the brushed silver) and also as a body only (in matte black also in brushed silver).

The Canon Digital Rebel XT's image sensor
The Rebel XT's image sensor possesses the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, creating a highly effective angle of view which may be 1.6 times the conventional EF lens's focal length.
While a number of feature advancements and innovations in the new EOS Digital Rebel XT video camera are inherited from Canon's EOS 20D "prosumer" SLR, the two main cameras' most striking technological similarities are their us going for Canon's newly developed, large single plate, high sensitivity, high resolution color CMOS imaging sensor technology. Since the proportions the APS C CMOS sensor around the EOS Digital Rebel XT SLR is fractionally small compared to the APS C CMOS sensor along the EOS 20D camera (22.2 x 14.8 millimeters versus 22.5 x 15.0 millimeters, respectively) accounting partly for those cameras' 8.0 vs. 8.2 megapixel resolution rating, individual pixel dimensions are identical, they usually both provide the same effective angle of view, reminiscent of 1.6x the normal EF lens focal length.

There are, surely, some very real differences concerned with the EOS Digital Rebel XT camera additionally , the heightened EOS 20D. While the 20D SLR includes performance features which includes faster continuous shooting speed (5 frames per second [fps] vs. 3 fps) with larger burst capability (23 frames vs. 14 frames) and custom function settings (18 vs. 9) that more than justify its heftier cost, this new Rebel XT model is planned for anyone dedicated SLR users who ? re migrating to digital initially , nor desire to sacrifice the flexibility an SLR system offers.

The Canon Digital Rebel XT's seven point AF
Choose a single point of focus or predictive autofocus, or direct the digital camera to bring about the determination using its 7 point AF system.
Autofocus Made Easy
Utilizing precisely the same 7 point autofocus system because EOS Digital Rebel camera, the latest EOS Digital Rebel XT SLR is capable of analyzing certainly where an subject is even if it's off center and almost immediately bringing it into focus. Additionally , it may analyze subject movement and automatically select locking or tracking AF modes as needed. These characteristics simplify the camera's operation and optimize its performance. Digital Rebel XT allows users to pick out locking or tacking AF modes independently, adding a different dimension of creative control.

Finer Photos Faster
The new EOS Digital Rebel XT camcorder can shoot up to 14 consecutive large/fine (8.0 megapixel) JPEGs, five RAW files, or four RAW + large/fine JPEGs for a price up to 3 fps. The EOS Digital Rebel camera's smaller buffer permits bursts of only four large/fine (6.3 megapixel) JPEG or RAW frames for a price up to 2.5 fps.

While reprising the Digital Rebel SLR's ISO variety of 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600, Canon raised the Auto ISO setting relating to the Digital Rebel XT model to 400 for helping improve image quality, reduce trembling camera, and brighten the scene behind this issue when getting a flash photo. The fresh Digital Rebel XT camera has also 12 exposure modes that can be user selectable for the turn of your conveniently placed dial. The exposure modes Full Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close up, Sports, Night Portrait, Flash Off, Program AE, Shutter Speed Priority AE, Aperture Priority AE, Manual, and Auto Depth of Field AE take into mind practically all shooting conditions and preferences.

In addition to its lossless compression 8.0 megapixel RAW image file option, the Rebel XT Digital SLR offers users a choice of shooting within a variety sizes and quality JPEG settings from large (8.0 megapixel) and medium (4.15 megapixel) to small (2.0 megapixel). Within each resolution option, the owner might also select quality settings: large/fine, large/normal, medium/fine, medium/normal, small/fine, and small/normal.

RAW Power
What's more, as the original Digital Rebel camera required dedicated software to extract embedded medium/fine resolution JPEGs through the larger, uncompressed RAW image file, this new Rebel XT model saves RAW and large/fine resolution images separate files at the CompactFlash card. The user also provides selecting selecting RAW (8.0 megapixel) files only, saving valuable space within the CF card. Like with the EOS 20D, digital Rebel XT camera's RAW files are denoted through the CR2 extension.

Creative Control
Among the popular features on the EOS Digital Rebel XT camera are user selectable metering and AF modes, flash exposure compensation control, improved E TTL II evaluative flash metering, and, initially in such a product category, custom function control. The Digital Rebel XT SLR even creates a monochrome way of consumers who watch the subtleties and shadings that only black and white images offer.

The Rebel XT camera incorporates nine belonging to the Custom Functions previously on the EOS 20D model. Created to fine tune camera operation reported by personal preferences, the custom functions offer users a group of programming choices for the SET button/cross keys, combined with control over long exposure noise reduction, flash sync speed in AV mode, AF start from the shutter button or AE lock button, AF assist beam, mirror lockup, E TTL II metering patterns, and shutter curtain sync.

All This and DIGIC II
Canon's newest and quite a few powerful SLR imaging engine, DIGIC II, provides high precision and high speed, natural color reproduction including high saturation, bright subjects, improved auto white balance, and increased white balance correction control and white balance bracketing during the original Digital Rebel camera.

The white balance correction control is known as a digital color filter that will be such as a light balancing filter or perhaps color compensating filter. The blue/amber bias as well as magenta/green bias could be adjusted to +/ 9 levels. While the blue/amber bias adjustment is standard in the original Digital Rebel model, the Rebel XT camera's additional magenta/green bias adjustment provides increased color compensation in the earlier model.

The Canon Digital Rebel XT's Digic Processor
The XT's DIGIC II image processor ensures natural colors, accurate white balance, and speedy write times.
The Rebel XT SLR's white balance bracketing mode enables you to automatically take three images for each shot snapped, each which includes a different bias setting. The user are able to simply select the best shot and discard the additional two. White balance bracketing they can double in conjunction with white balance correction. Choose may white balance wizardry come in the photographs with colors captured accurately and precisely with a a wide variety of conditions.

In addition with the legion of image quality improvements, DIGIC II quickens the camera's performance from startup, that is certainly Ten times faster over the EOS Digital Rebel XT model (0.2 seconds) than it is at the EOS Digital Rebel using the original iteration of DIGIC (2 seconds).

Another feature improved from the presence of DIGIC II stands out as the speed of one's direct printing function, and that is PictBridge compatible. DIGIC II also produces faster startup times, faster CompactFlash card writing speed, and approximately 10x faster data transfer speeds on account of the processor's new USB 2.0 high speed interface. Being a added bonus, the DIGIC II chip is actually efficient, it actually cuts down on EOS Digital Rebel XT camera's power consumption (and extends life of the battery) by approximately 35 %. Indeed, this new Rebel XT camera is really so energy efficient, it is usually powered because of the same lighter weight NB 2LH battery pack applied by the PowerShot S60 (versus the larger BP 511A battery pack applied by the Digital Rebel model).

The Canon Digital Rebel XT's 35 zone metering
Select 35 zone AF point evaluative metering, partial metering at the center in the image, or center weighted averaged metering.
E TTL II: Exposure Control within the Flash
The new Rebel XT camera also features the next measure on the evolution of evaluative, through the lens exposure control, E TTL II. Though best with all Canon EX series Speedlites, this smarter new E TTL II system helps ensure that, even situations with highly reflective subjects or backgrounds or when shooting practically in most other similarly difficult lighting situations, the actual will likely be optimally exposed.

The E TTL II system compares the ambient light along with the reflected pre flash over the subject reported every one 35 metering zones and selects the areas having small impact on be weighted for flash exposure calculation. The software also helps eliminate or underweight areas with large differences, recognizing them being a extremely reflective object device possibly a highly reflective subject.

Bundled Software
Both the Rebel XT Camera and lens kit plus the body only kit are shipped with three software discs, including EOS Digital Solutions Disc 10 featuring ZoomBrowser EX, ImageBrowser, and ArcSoft PhotoStudio as well as other utilities; another disc containing Digital Photo Professional 1.6 for RAW file conversions; along with third disc containing PDF versions on the instruction manuals for each application.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon Coolpix S210 8.0MP Dslr camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Graphite Black) (Electronics)
This is a first time that I bought something mroe challenging avaiable for purchase. Typically, I order something after it has been reviewed for around A few months, but I had produced to exchange the "family point and shoot" before Easter. I am replacing my old Nikon Coolpix 5900 (which has been a little bit of bulky, but took FANTASTIC photos). Besides loved the playback quality quality. I stayed in the Nikon family because it is the things i know, and I just am not in a position pay such a lot of towards the Canon lines (and that i cannot stand the photo quality can't explain, but I recommend my Nikon better).

I got the camera Two weeks ago, because of this far Available:
1) It's incredibly small which can be bad and the good. It may possibly go anywhere, but holding it forces you to sort of nervous, like your story could drop it easily.
2)The bigger viewscreen is large, and i also am very worried which may drop it and shatter it easily. The digital camera itself is very smooth, and feels "slippery" with you.
3) The one complaint that I know I even had with my old Nikon shutter/recovery time is slow with this camera you should not just "click" away. This may not be so nice if you have fidgety children, so you like to capture a second.
4) The scene/mode setup has slightly changed in my position, in order to discover a better "mode", you can not just turn the dial, like Used to do on the old 5900, you will have to push some more buttons. This can be tedious while you're moving from different environments, as well as affect the settings.
5) The largest complaint Relating to is always this camera is carries a very sensitive at autofocusing, and in accordance with whatever i have noticed thus far, it will not take pictures closeup if you do not actually set it from the macro mode.

I don't think I'm able to give it back because On the net that unfortunately, these new cameras are not appearing to last, and I won't invest over $200 for just a point and shoot. This is perfect for quick shots when you are from a busy schedule, and that can easily fit into your back pocket. To the better photos, Make the most of my D80 (this is a dream).

4/4/08 UPDATE Personally i have tried the digital camera some more. Relating to noted that:
1) to access the shots to be released, anyone need to become quite knowledgeable with the best way to adjust your settings (exposure compensation, mode, source of light, white balance, etc.) READ THE MANUAL, and PRACTICE. While you figure that out, your pictures are fine. This does go for a little tedius if you find yourself looking to capture that moment with fidgeting subjects (i.e. children & animals).
2) Also, the movies usually are not MPG's anymore vehicle on the AVI format. They still turn up fine, and also the mic is SUPERSENSITIVE
3) The latch in the battery compartment remains the same this worries me as this is what failed on my 5900, (and my mom's Canon). Once that ran out, (and we made vacation), the digital camera was not ever the identical (i.e. beach air, sand, AC a person does the math). You may think what are the real fix this challenge, but We are seeing it without one line, but others also.
4) That's not me an absolute fan for the way you switch from regular camera, towards specific scene (i.e. indoors, niteshots, etc), to movie mode. You have to push a MODE button, scroll, and then push OK. The buttons over the back overlap with my old 5900, a little bit of smaller (men with big fingers might get annoyed easily).
5) The on/off button is TINY it is right in just about the button that you use to plan the photos/and take videos (over the rest the camera). Honestly, I confuse them often, and definately will turn your camera off once i have to generate a video.

All in all of,Just could do all over again, I wouldn't go ultracompact and would go slighter. It serves it's purpose, fresh fruits you're getting whatever you acquired.

UPDATE 1/9/09: By September 08, I needed to put together another camera because one thought they would digest on my children vacation Now i'm TRULY not only a fan about this camera (the Lens just thought we would not open and close). I may just give it to my 4 yr old, and let her enjoy it. I gambled and got the waterproof Pentax, while far, I'm pleased (not elated, but shall be satisfied for the moment).
